2 Day Master Class: Current Threats - Explosive Device and Bombs
(Purpose, Methods, Preventive Measures, and Identification)

There is increased use of explosive devices by adversaries / Terrorist in the world. This session will address the following critical areas; what is the threat, understanding the explosive forces, and how do we protect ourselves and others. Additionally we will explore the motives used by bombers, recent threat changes, and gain an understanding of explosive forces and how they affect critical infrastructure. The attendee will gain firsthand knowledge in identifying an explosive device, medical preparedness issues, practical physical security measures and features, and insight into the various policies and procedures that will mitigate or minimize an explosive event.

The suicide bomber (suicide IED – Improvise Explosive Device) is one of the most dangerous and effective weapon systems facing civilized societies today and into the future. Suicide IEDs have become the terrorists’ preferred weapon of choice.

They are inexpensive, relatively easy to produce, difficult to counter and have a very attractive risk/reward ratio for the terrorist. As seen in contemporary conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and in the Middle East.

IED attacks can also have a destabilizing and destructive effect on deployed forces engaged in nation-building efforts. In particular, the threat from suicide bombers and Explosive presents a significant challenge in terms of tactics, techniques and procedures.

Knowledge is power!!!
Remember: In every type of attack, the explosion is the result of a mechanism that causes the detonator to ignite the explosive material. This means that Explosive devices consist of three parts:
•  A mechanism
•  A detonator
•  Explosive materials

Course Outline

The Bomb-Security seminar is of top importance for several reasons, which we will cover the seminar as follows:

A. Combing of premises – the shift of every security guard begins with a procedure of handing over the responsibility over the field/section and of course performing a preliminary inspection of the premises; the inspection is intended to locate unusual or extraordinary items or the demolition charge itself.

B. The seminar will cover all of the following questions, which may rise during the combing of the premises:

  • What method should we use?
  • What should we search for?
  • What do suspicious items actually look like?
  • What does the charge consist of?
  • What causes it to explode?
  • What are the most modern techniques that terrorist organizations utilize?
  • Booby traps

Instruction Method:
The instruction during the course of the seminar is performed using presentations and videos; furthermore, the participants share the information and experience we have to offer, including the following:

  • Familiarity and identification of the components of demolition charges.
  • Analysis of past events and extraction of operative conclusions so as not to repeat past mistakes.
  • We provide practical training that instructs the participants as to what they should not touch under any circumstances!!! We base the tools we offer on logic instead of encouraging automatic procedures; in other words, we teach security personnel how to think.

The Adversary:
When attempting to place a demolition charge, the adversary utilizes intelligence-gathering techniques. The data gathered is then analyzed in order to choose the appropriate course of action, which will enable the adversary to perform the terrorist attack and design the most appropriate charge.

The purpose of the seminar is thus to actually widen the participants’ perspective and allow them to attain suitable tools in order to confront the problem more effectively.

The seminar will also cover the following topics:

  • Demolition charges and the threat of explosives in the service of terrorism.
  • Mechanisms and detonators terrorists use—standard and improvised/home-made.
  • Suicide bombers—recruitment methods, incentives, what they are willing to do, and what makes them sacrifice themselves in order to kill others.
  • The identification of suicide bombers—how can we recognize them prior to the terrorist attack?
  • Bomb cars—the most lethal terrorist weapon: types, complex utilization methods, roadside explosive charges, and suicide drivers!
  • Security-system planning—how can we design our security system in light of varied courses of action the adversary can utilize, what are the priorities, and how can we define them?
  • Security-related technology—how can technologies help to confront the threat of explosives?
  • Following an attack—in case an attack has taken place, heavens forbid, what measures should we take, what preparations should we do, and in what manner should we manage the attack scene? Who should respond first and who should be second to respond? What is the appropriate order? This presentation includes a short video, which captured a suicide attack on a bus seconds after the event.
